Дело было в одной из восточноевропейских стран. На одной из типичных для этого региона заштатных экономических конференций выступал высокопоставленный представитель одного из ведущих финансовых институтов Германии. Глаза его горели: он говорил о величии Европы - настоящем и будущем.
Мы, европейцы, не можем претендовать на звание великой военной державы - здесь нам США никогда не догнать, слишком велик разрыв. Да, впрочем, это и не нужно. Военная сила - устаревший способ контроля. У Евросоюза есть другой козырь - экономическое могущество. Евро - воплощение этого могущества. Уже сегодня зона евро - это один из крупнейших мировых рынков. Скоро на евро перейдет Восточная Европа. Страны Азии готовы начать переход на расчеты в евро. Победное шествие евро по планете не за горами. Евро не будет просто конкурирующей с долларом валютой - время доллара прошло. Евро станет валютой доминирующей. И это создаст основы европейского могущества. Приняв евро, мир примет и европейские ценности, и европейские институты, и европейский взгляд на мир.
Откровенность, с которой это говорилось, поражала. Это не было выступлением финансиста, это было очень похоже на выступление политика 30-х годов прошлого века. С той лишь разницей, что вместо слов о величии нации с трибуны неслись слова "Европа", "евро", "экономическое могущество ЕС".
