This approach can lead to data structures with extremely large numbers of records because the number of records is the product of the cohort size, average length of follow- up, and the resolution of the person- period enumeration (i.e., the size of the structure increases as the length of the person- periods enumerated decreases, for example, from person- years to person- days) to reduce coarsening of the originally recorded time- varying information.
