German term

Treppenhäuser und Fluchtreppen

German to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
Communal areas of a building, in this context they are in a list of parts of the building which need cleaning - not very helpful I'm afraid.

Does anyone have a good English equivalent?

stairwells and fire escapes

Treppenhaus is definitely stairwell, and would make sense in this context. I'm less certain about the second one, but it might refer to stairs on the outside of the building that are used in the event of fire.

Thanks Klaus.
agree Sonja Schuberth-Kreutzer : Fluchtreppen sind doch "curse stairs" bzw. "spell stairs" oder ;-) (Fluchttreppen is the right spelling in German)

Yes, I thought that might be a typo. Thanks Sonja.

\"fire escapes\" makes me think of the iron ladders on the outside of buildings. They don\'t really exist in Germany and I think a cleaning crew would have a hard time cleaning them :-)
