In my mind, "vizinho" represents the people he met (or rather, didn't meet) since they were a "detour" in his life. Possibly an allusion to this tendency to aloofness (in a physical sense); he was known to be a reserved person and not have many friends.

My difficulties here are: (1) how to translate "vizinho", since I ruled out "neighbor" (it doesn't go well with the rest of the poem and doesn't seem to be the real meaning). Acquaintance? Associate? Person? Or perhaps "traveler" since he's alluding to a "viagem" (which I translated as "journey", a metaphor for life). And (2) how to represent this metaphor by which each "vizinho" is seen as a detour? (Ideally, the last word of this line will rhyme, or at least go well, with "circumstances of the path" (my translation for "circunstâncias do caminho").

Asker: Já usei "road" em lugar de "street". Penso que "path" fica bem como tradução de "caminho". Outra opção seria "way", que já descartei. "Vizinho" e "amigo" são coisas diferentes. "Vizinho" implica uma relação próxima, no sentido geográfico, mas também pode não implicar relação nenhuma. Tenho vizinhos com quem nunca me relacionai, sequer conheci.

Asker: Obrigado, José Patrício. Parece-me que há uma diferença semântica considerável entre os dois termos. "Desvio" implica o não uso da rua/estrada, portanto um não encontro. "Narrowness", por sua vez, apenas um estreitamento da estrada e, metaforicamente, das relações humanas.
