English term
flywheel pot
English

Mechanics / Mech Engineering
from a spare part list for tractors
"Before fitting this increased size clutch the flywheel pot Dia. must be increased to 331mm - 13.03in."
what's a flywheel pot? is pot an abbreviation? does it have another, more common, name?
thanks!

I'm not an expert either, but as regards this particular use of 'pot', I think it must be referring to either:
a) the hollowed-out portion in the middle of the flywheel --- most vehicle flywheels have a thick outside rim (where the weight counts most for the flywheel effect), but are of reduced thickness in the middle, presumably to save overall weight and space. It is in this space that the whole clutch assembly usually fits --- hence why it would be necessary to enlrage it if a bigger-diameter clutch were being fitted; this is also consistent with the dimension given.
b) I suppose it is just possible that this could alternatively be referring to the flywheel casing (more usually a bell-housing) --- however, I feel this is less likely.
Sorry I can't be more help!

I entered flywheel pot on google and got 10 results
you can also make pots using a flywheel but THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT !!!

I'm not an expert but this is what I'vw found.
Flywheel: A relatively large and heavy metal wheel that is attached to the back of the crankshaft to smooth out the firing impulses. It provides inertia to keep the crankshaft turning smoothly during the periods when no power is being applied. It also forms a I'm not an expert but this is what I've found:base for the starterring gear and, in manual transmission, for the clutch assembly.
Pot:
[1] A colloquial term for "carburetor."
[2] An abbreviation for a "potentiometer."
[3] A cylinder.
Check also references.

: In this case, I don't believe that any of these 3 suggestions for 'pot' is appropriate.

Ref. CHAMBERS:
A heavy wheel attached to a shaft (e.g.) an engine crankshaft) EITHER to reduce the speed fluctuation resulting from uneven torque OR to store up kinetic energy to be used in driving a punch, shears, etc. during a short interval.
Today there are also fast spinning flywheels - originating from the centrifuges used in uranium enrichment which offer much higher perfomance than the old traditional ones. Though I m sure your tractor still has an old type.
In your case pot does mean containment, cylinder, container, housing shell.

flywheel chamber, case, container...
This "case" contains your flywheel. If your cluth size has been increased, you also have to increase the diameter of the flywheel container. That's pot. Good luck.
