La fórmula PRO PROTHY es una contracción de PRO PROTHONOTARY: aquí aparece completo en un "docket":

Pues bien: prothonotary es el título del "chief court clerk" de determinados tribunales en los estados de Pensilvania y Delaware. Antes se empleaba en otros estados de EE. UU., e históricamente en Inglaterra. Existe también en Australia. He aquí la Wikipedia:

Y parece que va desapareciendo incluso en Pensilvania, por ejemplo en el condado de Filadelfia:

(Por cierto, no puedo resistirme a citar la siguiente anécdota, incluida en la página de Wikipedia: "U.S. President Harry S. Truman was introduced to a prothonotary during a campaign stop in Pittsburgh in 1948. It is rumored that Truman's first reaction upon hearing the term "prothonotary" was to say "What the hell is a prothonotary?".")

No tiene ningún sentido traducirlo por "protonotario" en español; este término corresponde solamente a un administrador real en el Antiguo Régimen o a un protonotario apostólico en la Iglesia Católica; no significa un secretario judicial.

Así pues, me parece que por "prothonotary" se podría emplear secretario judicial (jefe) (que ya se llama "letrado de la administración de justicia" en España), o "director de la oficina judicial", que viene a ser lo mismo. Como lo veas.

La primera parte, "PRO", me parece que tiene que ser latín (así que el término sería una mezcla de latín e inglés, ya que en latín sería "pro prothonotario"). La preposición "pro" tiene varios sentidos, pero aquí creo que tiene que significar "por" o "en nombre/representación de":

Nótese, por ejemplo, este documento muy reciente del Court of Common Pleas del condado de Filadelfia, en el que aparece (pág. 1) "FILED PRO PROTHY / FEB 11 2019 / A SILIGRINI". El firmante, A. Siligrini, no es el prothonotary de este tribunal, que se llama actualmente Eric Feder:

Así que debe de ser un funcionario que firma en nombre de / por el prothonotary.
