thirty-nine one thousand and firsts (39/1001) Explanation: We had a not dissimilar question just the other day: https://www.proz.com/kudoz/french-to-english/real-estate/658... Here you have it in words and numbers. With fractions, the rule is always that the numerator is a cardinal number and the denominator is an ordinal. And in English, unlike French, you don't want either "ths" or "sts" after the denominator when it's written in figures (if you did, it would be "sts": the ordinal is 1001st). I think you need to insert "one" before "thousand" here, because "thirty nine thousand and firsts" would be confusing. I've come across a website for this. Of course, there's no guarantee that what it says is right, but I think it is: http://tulengua.es/numeros-texto/default.aspx Optional variants would be to hyphenate "one-thousand-and-firsts", to make it a little easier to read, and/or to put "one-thousand-and-first parts" or "one-thousand-and-first shares". See previous question, where these options were suggested. I don't think either is essential. |
