Darby

English to Spanish Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering Darby
The three stucco coats are lath, scratch
coat, and brown coat. This is accomplished
by applying stucco to a wooden wall includes
the use of a water-resistant barrier such as
asphalt infused paper (also known as Grade
D kraft paper). The water-resistant barrier is
installed from the bottom up, followed by the
lath which is a combination of metal wire and
a weep screed. Next comes the scratch coat,
where the stucco mix is applied using a hawk
and trowel. A “scratcher” or scarifier is used
to create horizontal scratches. The scratch
coat application is followed by a brown coat,
which is applied directly on top of the scratch
coat, and made uniform with a darby (long
trowel). The finish coat is applied last.

A darby is used specifically on the brown coat and is a long trowel looking tool that has two handles on it. It is used to make sure that the cement is spread evenly on the brown coat of stucco and removes any low or high spots in the wall.
