Kontekst: "To identify additional mutant alleles of [XXX], a _public collection of maize diversity lines_ was first screened for susceptibility to the beetle in the field under natural conditions of infestation before validation by the foliar feeding choice assay described in [XXX]. Two _public diversity lines_, [XXX] and [XXX], were found to segregate for susceptibility to the beetle. By crossing each of the lines to the [XXX] line, it was shown that [XXX] and [XXX] contained naturally occurring mutant alleles at the [XXX] gene that conferred increased susceptibility to beetles."

Public vs private may concern lines developed by breeders working in the private (for profit companies) vs. public sector (i.e., public institutions such as university and government laboratories):
Darrah. and Ziiber (1984) enç>hasized that the decreased use of public
lines should not be construed to indicate a narrowing of the genetic
base. Rather, they credit private breeders with continued successful
development of new proprietary lines. Most breeders are currently
employed in the private, rather than the public sector. Thus, because of
the trend toward use of private lines, fewer breeders responded to survey
questionnaires (36 respondents in 1984 versus 53 in 1979) because they
deal with proprietary information. In addition, there is a trend for
breeders in the public sector to concentrate on population improvement
and germplasm sources rather than inbred line development (Zuber and
Darrah, 1979; Darrah and Zuber, 1984). Because of the decreased use of
public lines, it appears that survey data will no longer be the best
gauge of the genetic base of U. S. hybrid maize.

Po moim dalszym researchu wynika, że termin "linie wsobne" jest szeroko występujący w polskiej literaturze, natomiast ani słowa nie ma o "publicznych liniach zróżnicowania" lub podobnie brzmiących terminach...
