Prosecuting Crimes

This is what it actually means in English, and this is how it would most likely be phrased by a native, so that other natives would understand what it means.

this appears to be a legitimate term of art in Russian law, but translating it as "support of" or "maintenance of" (eew!) makes it about how many sugars you as a paralegal are supposed to put into the prosecutor's coffee, i.e. amounts to a mistranslation. Susan is perfectly right about that. It is not about any "support" functions. It is about prosecuting crimes, so why not say it in a manner your target audience will understand?

Which, in turn, opens yet another can of worms. Who is the target audience here and what do they expect you to produce? If they want the comfort of usual Runglish, then you may indeed be better off simply calling it "public prosecution," which will definitely work in this case too, even if it doesn't win you any prizes for the beauty of your legal prose:)

Finally, definitely "public," not "State". Not in AmE anyway.
Note from asker:
Thank you, Misha, no, Runglish is not an option here, it is intended for one of the Australian Universities, and I certainly do not want them to raise their eyebrows at my translation! @Susan, I see what you mean, but I think when they see the number of hours - 72 - they will change their meaning:).

neutral Susan Welsh : On a diploma? Makes it sound like the kid graduating is a prosecutor, which is doubtful.

Nope. Nobody graduates as a prosecutor. Everyone takes a more or less standard assortment of courses, of which prosecution is but one. Where's the contradiction?

disagree Susan Welsh : What does it mean? Makes no sense to me.

It makes sense in the context of Russian law.
neutral The Misha : It sure does make sense in the context of Russian law, but we are translating into English here, aren't we? Kindly see what I wrote in my own answer below.

This is a give and take here. We do have to take into account the opinions of our brethren back home.

public prosecution process
Peer comment(s):

neutral Susan Welsh : But what about the "подержание" part? This in itself could not be an item on a diploma.

Thank you! The "подержание" is about "ведение” or “осуществление” here.

Public Prosecution

Как вариант можно и без дословного перевода, просто 'Public Prosecution'. Также 'Public', возможно, более уместно, так как 'state' всегда может иметь отношения и к судебной системе штата (в США), что в русском языке не подразумевается, и англоязычный сайт Ген. прокуратуры РФ так переводит:

The only term close to the Russian "поддержание" I have encountered in relation to Public Prosecution was management — program in Public Prosecution Management, but it was offered in a Kenyan university, so I wouldn't cite it as a correct or common translation.

Susan, 'поддержание' here means conducting or leading, which may be omitted when translated into English. In my opinion and according to google search it's understood that students taking this course will learn about how to manage public prosecution.

This appears to be a technical term...

...judging by the number of google hits. "Support" sounds like it could be the work of a paralegal, or someone who brings coffee to the prosecution team. Other EN translations I find are "maintenance" (which is equally unclear) and "representation" (see Reverso link to the UN Corpus). None of these are authoritative.
