(various meanings) war come to an end with fall of Saigon Explanation: This could have multiple meanings and figurative links as the book refers to lots of other books/films (see here: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2016/mar/12/the-sympathize... but it is (partially/mostly(?)) about the Vietnam war which ended with the fall of Saigon in April https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnam_War 1975 the first part "April is the cruellest month" refers to the line from The Waste Land by T.S. Eliot (https://engl2523.wordpress.com/2013/11/06/fragmentation-and-... which figuratively describes the post WW1 waste land of Europe where millions had died and empires had collapsed with opposing images of death and regeneration, memory, oblivion, forgetfulness and desire feature along with rituals of kingship and kingmaking and fertility taken from the books "From Ritual to Romance" and "The Golden Bough". These same books also featured in the film Apocalyse Now ...also about Vietnam...where Marlon Brando talks about the horrors of war and about the Viet Cong chopping off arms that had been inocculated by the Americans and saying that that will to win was necessary to win the war (men) "who can...kill without feeling... without passion... without judgment... ! Because it's judgment that defeats us" kill without feeling... without passion... without judgment... without judgment! Because it's judgment that defeats us. " -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr (2016-12-03 21:50:47 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- so...multiple levels of meaning and referencing of other works... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2 hrs (2016-12-03 21:56:41 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- we also have an expression" it's like losing a limb" which means that things will never be the same again... and certainly neither Vietnam nor the USA were the same after the fall of Saigon... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 7 hrs (2016-12-04 03:33:05 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- forgot to give link for "Apocalyse Now" fim script... Brando plays Col. Kurtz https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Apocalypse_Now -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 15 hrs (2016-12-04 11:26:36 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Thanks! Glad to help. Good authors/books usually require lots of wider reading to "get" the deeper symbolic/figurative meanings. Unfortunately, lots of people these days have Twitteresque attention spans and knowledge and would probably prefer what Björn suggests :-) -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 15 hrs (2016-12-04 11:36:12 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- should also have include films above and of course "Apocalyse Now" (my favourite film) referenced so many other works as well including other Eliot poems and Conrad -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 4 days (2016-12-08 00:11:35 GMT) Post-grading -------------------------------------------------- You're welcome:-) just noticed typo (x 3!) ApocalyPse!! |
