English term or phrase: lose its (one\'s) limbs
The month in question was April, the cruelest month. It was the month in which a war that had run on for a very long time would lose its limbs, as is the way of wars.
(From The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen)
Here is some figurative meaning that I failed to fihure out, but it's definitely not about amputation. You may give your explanation in German, Russian, Spanish or English.

(various meanings) war come to an end with fall of Saigon
Explanation:
This could have multiple meanings and figurative links as the book refers to lots of other books/films (see here: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2016/mar/12/the-sympathize...
but it is (partially/mostly(?)) about the Vietnam war which ended with the fall of Saigon in April
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnam_War 1975

the first part

"April is the cruellest month" refers to the line from The Waste Land by T.S. Eliot
(https://engl2523.wordpress.com/2013/11/06/fragmentation-and-...
which figuratively describes the post WW1 waste land of Europe where millions had died and empires had collapsed with opposing images of death and regeneration, memory, oblivion, forgetfulness and desire feature along with rituals of kingship and kingmaking and fertility taken from the books "From Ritual to Romance" and "The Golden Bough".

These same books also featured in the film Apocalyse Now ...also about Vietnam...where Marlon Brando talks about the horrors of war and about the Viet Cong chopping off arms that had been inocculated by the Americans and saying that that will to win was necessary to win the war (men) "who can...kill without feeling... without passion... without judgment... ! Because it's judgment that defeats us" kill without feeling... without passion... without judgment... without judgment! Because it's judgment that defeats us. "

we also have an expression" it's like losing a limb" which means that things will never be the same again...
and certainly neither Vietnam nor the USA were the same after the fall of Saigon...

Thanks! Glad to help.
Good authors/books usually require lots of wider reading to "get" the deeper symbolic/figurative meanings. Unfortunately, lots of people these days have Twitteresque attention spans and knowledge and would probably prefer what Björn suggests :-)

should also have include films above and of course "Apocalyse Now" (my favourite film) referenced so many other works as well including other Eliot poems and Conrad

Notes to answerer
Asker: Enjoyed reading your answer and especially the links. I guess your Lit. students adored you :) In addition to that I remebered The Quiet American by Graham Greene, whcih I read both in English & in Russian. That gave me important clues for the selection of synonyms.

  -> Thanks Tony:-)

agree  Björn Vrooman: You've figured out the meaning without requiring an excerpt from the book. Nevertheless, you may want to take a look at the d-box. // You bookworm :) Rare occurence these days. I'm waiting on the first Twitter-style fairytale: "Princess kisses frog. Bad!"

-> Thanks Björn...I looked at the excerpt myself online (Asker could have given a longer one) but figured the main themes of the book were more important, see 1st link, as ref to Eliot's poem struck me right away//LOL studied/taught Lit. for years!

agree  Helena Chavarria: I enjoyed reading your very interesting answer!
