As a mountainbiker I can tell you that it is pentes and not côtes that we are attracted to. And definitely for fun, no hazardous course in this case.

With you on that Tony, seems logical: people throwing themselves down a "hazardous descent" as you so nicely put it and thus having to push out their boundaries (risk, courage, etc.).

I must admit I had instinctively read it as DOWNHILL slopes strewn with stones, making for a hazardous descent. Like that old expression "a slippery slope..."

"Des pentes" : A strange choice of term from the original writer; the term that French people would tend to collocate with "le dépassement de soi" would more likely be "des côtes" rather than "des pentes" which they associate with "des descentes (à tombeau ouvert)" which riders gleefully revel in, displaying skill and courage rather than toughing it out in sustained superhuman efforts and endurance. But this contrast is neutralised in English with "slopes" isn't it? or would there be a way to match this French distinction if it was necessary to do so in the target language?

It looks like a typo and should be "pentes", no?
