La característica geológica común de estos tepuis es su localización sobre los macizos centrales de estos escudos, su geología relacionada a rocas meta-sedimentarias del precámbrico, con estratificación horizontal; morfológicamente tepuis de gran extensión, bien conservados y con alturas que alcanzan los 3000 m.s.n.m. La posición geográfica del PNN de Chiribiquete la hace diferente en encontrase a más de 3000 km de este escudo, y a 300 km de los andes colombianos, su origen de alto de basamento por tectónismo es particularmente diferente a los tepuis del y cratón central. En Chiribiquete las rocas existentes se relacionan a areniscas blandas con un nivel de cuarcita de la Formación Araracuara de edad Paleozoico. La tectónica y la geología estructural en este parque es más marcada que en los tepuis de Venezuela y Brasil y tienen gran incidencia en la geomorfológia de la Serranía, La morfología del PNN de Chiribiquete no está asociada a un Tepuy en particular sino a la diversidad de formas allí desarrolladas por procesos erosivos y estructurales como la presencia de gnammas residuales, son de menor altura (800 y 300 m.s.n.m.) y de menor extensión
