The LNG (liquefied natural gas) is pumped via an insulated, 36-inch transfer line to the loading platform located at the end of a 2,200-ft-long pier. The loading platform supports four 16-in. LNG loading arms, one 16-inch vapor return arm, two vapor return compressors, and a 48-ft-high control tower.
During loading, vapor displaced from the ship's tanks is returned to shore via the 16-inch vapor return arm, the vapor return compressors, and the 24-inch vapor return 1 ine. Truck Loading Arms
Natural gas can be used as a replacement for oil, and as such, has far fewer impurities, and higher reserves (reserve-production ratio). Worldwide demand is on the increase, with Japan relying on imports for 96% of its supply, and import from distant producing countries requires LNG tankers. When natural gas is cooled to -162°C, it becomes a liquid, becoming 1/600 of its original volume, enabling efficient transport by tanker.
