Spanish term

llantas de retalón

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks
Country: Spain.

This occurs in a description of a vintage Hispano-Suiza (1920s) car - obviously describing a type of wheel typically used and therefore required for authentic restoration. "Las ruedas de los primitivos H6 montaban llantas de retalón con neumáticos más altos........."

Any car enthusiasts know definitively what these are? The word "retalón" is elusive.

Many thanks.

I'm blocked from answering because I'm not a a ProZ member. However, my answer would be 'Mounting Humps'. This is the slightly raised surface of the inner rim and is an extension of the rim bead (the tire also has a bead). This may be why it is named 'retalon', talon being the flat part, or bead. It is designed to seat the tire perfectly on the rim and to maintain that during high speeds and cornering manouvers. http://tires.about.com/od/understanding_tires/a/Wheel-Anatom...

As often occurs in Spanish, the "re" stuck on to "tálon" doesn't seem to serve any meaningful purpose (but it does)...

Thanks Neil, great. I had picked up the "bead-edge" reference but wasn't too sure!
