Hello everyone,

This sentence is part of the patient's report summary:

Je demande aux oncologues de X de me mettre parmi les correspondants des courriers et de revoir l'intérêt des explorations radiologiques qui avaient été prévues par les rhumatologues suite à la découverte de la fracture pathologique de sa clavicle droite, dans l'objectif de préciser si il s'agit d'une localisation secondaire de sa pathologie.

My question includes "revoir" actually. Since the radiological investigations were "prévues," it seems they haven't been done yet, but the report's author is encouraging the oncologists to make sure they see that they do get done in order to determine if their is a secondary pathology? Am I on the right track?

Subtlety I think you have hit it on the head Denise. The physician was treading lightly.

There was another question a while back in which a physician described a numbness symptom that the patient complained of, forming a "leopard spot" distribution of the arm. This confused the translator. The physician was actually expressing exasperation at the random distribution of the numb areas, not corresponding to any anatomical distribution of the sensory nerves.

Hello and thank you to everyone who has contributed to this discussion. It seems to me that while it's true that the use of "revoir" introduces ambiguity, just like "reconsider" can be ambiguous in English, the final part of the sentence removes the ambiguity. I wonder if the use of "revoir" was the author's attempt at treading lightly when making the suggestion that the oncologists pursue, to use Michael's suggestion, radiological investigations.

IMO there must have been ambiguity because in your initial translation suggestions you elaborated that it meant "to ask yourself if there is any point in making them etc." and "to reconsider whether it is worth the trouble (doing s.t.)". I took this to mean that you considered the underlying meaning to be not to do further imaging. My interpretation was the exact opposite. So what could be more ambiguous than that?

now what is the preferred answer for the one making the suggestion (if we can be sure of it from the rest of the ST, not from our own knowledge or assumptions) should be reflected in the way the translation is formulated;

In this ST, it is well possible that "les oncologues" are not very keen on additional radios, and that the MD writing this report is asking them to reconsider what was proposed by "les rhumatologues" - which would agree with
(a) what you consider should be done, AND
(b) with what "revoir l'intérêt de ..." could only mean. (as Linda Pigney put it " asking for a review of the benefit (for the patient) of further radiology")

I'm sure that if you are aware of their previous exchanges, there is no ambiguity as to in which direction the writer thinks it should be "reconsidered".

To Daryo Yes we should translate what is written in the source text. But my perspective is different. I am a physician, not a translator. Sometimes I know what the writer means because of my professional experience even when the ST is written in an ambiguous manner. Translation should be about conveying meaning not just passing along the ambiguity, especially in medical translations.

I have translated this paragraph a bit liberally.
Essentially, the writer is suggesting that additional imaging investigations, which have already been planned or scheduled by the rheumatologists, be pursued to see if there is a remote cancer that has already metastasized to the clavicle, causing the pathological fracture. This differs from the asker's understanding in that the secondary pathology is the fracture itself, and the writer is suggesting a search for the primary at some, as yet, undetermined site.

I ask X's oncologists to keep me appraised (keep me in the loop) and to refocus interest on the radiological investigations which had been scheduled by the rheumatologists following the pathological fracture of the clavicle in order to determine if it, (the fracture), is a secondary site of his (underlying) pathology.

In light of additional context where radiological exams were recommended but the patient didn't do them, it does seem like the doctor here does wants the oncologists to pursue the previously scheduled/planned radiological investigations. Your clarification of the idea that the pathological fracture of the clavicle may be secondary to another pathology was very helpful.

disagree Daryo : independently of the specialised questions regarding primary/secundary pathology, this construction in French "revoir ..." is about expressing doubts / inviting a reexamination of some decision

Knowing that the patient cancelled/did not agree to proposed radiological investigations (context I did not include in my question), and that the consulting Dr is now raising the possibility of a secondary pathology with the oncologists, I do think (despite the use of revoir) that the Doctor would like to see that these radiological examinations be done.

that's what "revoir l'intérêt de (faire qq ch)" means - whatever is the rest of the ST // OTOH it only means "think again about it" not necessarily "ditch it" /// AFAIK we translate what IS in the ST, not what we think SHOULD BE there?
