Does this perhaps mean "to obtain more sunlight"?

Our photographer talking about his work again:

Lo que espero ver de estos packs de broncolor es ver como congelan la acción gracias a su corta duración de flash y su gran capacidad de potencia para ganarle al sol, todavía no puedo entender donde caben esos 1200 w en ese pack tan pequeno.

I managed to contact the customer in the end regarding the meaning, "beat the sun" and "be more effective than sunlight" both sound fine, but I think "beat the sun" fits into the overall conversational context a little better. Thanks for the reference to the article.
