German term

Gipsmilch

German to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering Fire-proofing
Die Paßränder der Brandschutzplatten sind mit Gipsmilch streichen und zu festigen.

This document is Austrian and this particular part is about building a fire-proof partition. The only reference I have found to the word Gipsmilch says it is the same as Kontrasmittel:

http://www.ostarrichi.com/word-13078-Kontrastmittel-Gipsmilc...

which really does not seem to fit here. I presume it must be some sort of plaster coating, but does anyone know what term I should use?

Thank you

Discussion

Johannes Gleim Jul 20, 2015:
I am surprised, as skim has not the visosity of 'milk', water or gypsum powder diluted in water and cannot be painted. It is applied by using a trowel or sputtered by a plastering machine.

The context says, that the fire bats borders must be painted (and not plastered). How will fit plastering the context?
Johannes Gleim Jul 20, 2015:
Similarities and lack of definition The term "Gipsmilch" is uncommon and not standardized, contrary to "Kalkmilch". Hence the difficulties for translation. We can assume similarities between both terms in consistency, composition and word formation, but we cannot expect to find a genuine common English term.

Approaching the subject from the English side will not succeed acc. MHO, as we have no valid definition for the German term and not each English term is translated to German (Translations to English are more frequent than to German). Each odd English term will raise questions about its equivalency to the German term.
Johannes Gleim Jul 18, 2015:
@ Sarah skim coat is "Feinputz" in German acc. Gelbrich, Fachwörterbuch Architektur und Bauwesen. I consider this as solid material, not as fluid, as the term "Gipsmilch" let me suppose. Only viscous substances (fluids) can be painted and dried after all.

I would also notify the client or ask him for explanation.
Sarah Lewis-Morgan (asker) Jul 18, 2015:
My next option is apparently skim coating. I suspect this might just be the subject of a note to the customer. Thanks, Johannes, I could do that.
Johannes Gleim Jul 18, 2015:
gypsum milk? In case you have no other remedy, you may try a literal translation. But if you have a definition or specification, please inform us! Up to now I couldn't find that term in any dictionary.
Sarah Lewis-Morgan (asker) Jul 18, 2015:
Having done my phone a friend bit and had an explanation in German, I think the English word must be render. I don't know whether anyone could confirm that?

plaster veneer/skim

Plaster veneer (US terminology) or plaster skim (UK terminology) is a construction methodology for surfacing interior walls, by applying a thin layer of plaster over a substrate—typically over specially formulated gypsum board base, similar in nature to drywall.

whitewash

I'm really going out on a limb here, but maybe they mean "Kalkmilch" (which might be translated as whitewash)?
Note from asker:
An interesting option, but how fire-proof is whitewash? In my experience it tends to wipe off rather than solidify, or has it improved nowadays? Thanks for the suggestion.

but it is questionable, whether “lime milk” equals to “Gipsmilch”. According to the following Wikipedia articles gypsum (plaster) is different from lime.

Limewater is the common name for a diluted solution of calcium hydroxide. Calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2, is sparsely soluble in water (1.5 g/L at 25 °C.[1]) Pure limewater is clear and colourless, with a slight earthy smell and an alkaline bitter taste of calcium hydroxide. The term lime refers to the alkaline mineral, and is unrelated to the acidic fruit.
Limewater is prepared by stirring calcium hydroxide in pure water, and filtering off the excess undissolved Ca(OH)2. When excess calcium hydroxide is added to limewater, a suspension of calcium hydroxide particles results, giving it a milky aspect, in which case it has the common name of milk of lime. Milk of lime or a saturated solution of lime (limewater) has a pH of 12.3. It is basic in nature.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limewater

Calcium hydroxide, traditionally called slaked lime, is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Ca(OH)2. It is a colorless crystal or white powder and is obtained when calcium oxide (called lime or quicklime) is mixed, or "slaked" with water. It has many names including hydrated lime, builders' lime, slack lime, cal, or pickling lime. Calcium hydroxide is used in many applications, including food preparation. Limewater is the common name for a saturated solution of calcium hydroxide.

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gips

Gypsum is a soft sulfate mineral composed of calcium sulfate dihydrate, with the chemical formula CaSO4•2H2O.[3] It can be used as a fertilizer, is the main constituent in many forms of plaster and in blackboard chalk, and is widely mined.
