English term or phrase: Ran past me
Hi, I am reviewing the translation of an assay from a magazine. The section in the magazine is called "From the Recesses", and it consists of the memoirs of a teacher, who writes assays telling anecdotes from when he taught. I got stuck on a phrase, where he is talking about one student.

He says he would "love to know what became of her, but she’s one who ran past me while I was busy looking elsewhere in the rye."

The translator to Spanish wrote "Me encantaría saber qué fue de ella, pero fue ella la que me llevó la delantera mientras yo andaba cazando moscas".

I think that "me llevó la delantera" is completely wrong. I understand that the teacher means that he lost track of the student, but I do not know how to put it in Spanish. Could someone help me, please?

In advance I thank you for your attention.

me pasó de largo
Explanation:
mientras yo miraba para otro lado" tal vez? Hay una referencia al libro de JD Salinger, pero tal vez no sea necesario que se mantenga.

¡Muchas gracias, Patinba! Creo que «me pasó de largo» era la frase que estaba buscando. Pensé en la referencia al libro de Salinger, pero tampoco me pareció necesario.
¡Que tengas una linda semana!

ran past me
pasó fugazmente por mi lado

Explanation:
Creo que no tiene por qué perderse el "ran", que traduzco por "fugazmente". También da la idea de que no se detuvo ("past me").

ran past me
Se me escapó

Explanation:
se me escapó mientras yo observaba el horizonte (figurativamente refiriéndose al futuro: los otros estudiantes) as in slipped through my fingers.
I don't agree with "fue ella...." at all, because the second part of the sentence rye refers to the student body as a crop. Meaning, that because he was busy watching everyone, she "escaped" him as a single person.

Asker: ¡Muchísimas gracias por la sugerencia! Concuerdo en que "looking elsewhere in teh rye" se refiere a que estaba distraído.
