It is impossible for people to post answers with any certainty unless we have a bit more context from you. Can you say what type of document this is - an exhibition catalogue, catalogue of permanent collection, an article, auction catalogue? Thanks.

Yes, if it is an exhibition catalogue, collection privée is very probably the answer. We are just floundering here, though, without more input from Jenny. Hopefully she has found what she needs.

Hi Helen, I agree: it could be any of those things, and Kashew's suggestion of "private collection" could well be the solution, but impossible to know for sure (though maybe it's very common to see "C.P." as "collection privée"??).

My response to you doesn't seem to have been registered, so I'm sending it again. I agree it could well be the holding museum or perhaps a reference to the inventory, museum department or even a bibliographical source given at the beginning or end of the document. I think if I were Jenny I would go back to the client and ask what it means in this particular case.

Going by what's in brackets in the second part of the sentence, you'd say it's the name of the gallery or museum where a work is on exhibi, maybe Centre Pompidou in Paris?? Who's the artist?

Helen Shiner: Could well be - I wish we were being given more context./Strange that there are no commas before the CP in your examples./On second glance, I think these are photo credits. Loiret is a photographer. BNF is the Bibliothèque Nationale de France.
