Maria, I wouldn't be put off by the repetition - very common in legal texts and not a problem stylistically at all. "legally ratify" is the correct terminology - "confirm" doesn't quite carry the legal connotation

According to Merriam Webster's Dictionary of Synonyms:

RATIFY and CONFIRM are comparable when they mean to make something legally valid or operative...The terms are occasionally interchanged without loss, but RATIFY usually carries a stronger implication of approval than confirm...

It is not more than that, it is that. The only thing that may be confusing is the translation process of homologar > approve, but for the person who reads the text in English it is not confusing in the least. Moreover, approve, in said context, is used more than confirm.

“It does not really mean approve...”.
In legal English and in the context of a judge, “approve” or “accept” is to, as you say, “give legal authority.”

In this context, I believe that homologar means:
2 Der. Confirmar el juez ciertos actos o convenios de las partes dándoles así firmeza. Source: Maria Moliner
It does not really mean approve, but confirm, validate, give legal authority to something that has been agreed between the parties. The judge does not enter in the contents of the agreement, s/he just confirms it.

I can understand why someone may lean towards translating homologar as confirm or ratify, but in the judicial contex I believe “approve” or “accept” sounds more natural. This translation is not out of the realm of semantics as Ossorio defines the Spanish term, in one of the senses, as the following: ... En materia de quiebras, esta expresión se emplea con referencia a la aprobación judicial del concordato....

My mistake! They are requesting for approval. I misread the sentence. So it should be "The parties request...the approval of what is agreed upon here." Sorry. Lo siento.

Asker: jamespeel is right. The parties request the judicial approval of what they have agreed upon. "Homologar" is the approval by a Court or other authority of parties´acts in order to be effective. I understand the meaning. My doubt here is which phrase would be more appropriate for the context.

Asker: Thanks! The meaning is just fine. My problema here with ratify is that it appears in the following sentence, but it is definetely the correct meaning. I think I will go for "confirm". Thanks for your help.

Asker: Erwin: I don´t understand why you disagree in the first place. My question is about "homologarse" and not the other part of the sentence, so "request that this agreement be ratified" is the answer I am looking for. I think we all understand they are requesting two things... I don´t see your point.

Erwin S. Fernandez: The parties do not request for approval. The sentence is compound with y [and in English] as the marker that they approve apart from their request for the terminacion of whatever that is.

-> Look at the use of the subjunctive. The parties "solicitan" two things - one introduced by the subjunctive of "dar", and the other introduced by the subjunctive of "homologarse". The parties request legal ratification of the agreement - which they get!

Hans Geluk: Ratify is correct, not in the sense of 'approve' but in the sense of 'legally confirm'. If you want to avoid this confusion, use 'confirm'. If you need another synonym, 'sanction' would do too, especially in the first occasion ('sanctioned by the court')
