English term

backin' gordless 'orses

English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
"'You ain't been backin' gordless 'orses, Artie?' she asked.

'No fear.'

'It's a draw he's been in,' said Old Kipps, still panting from the impact of the portmanteau; 'it's a dratted draw. Jest look here, Molly. He's won this 'ere trashy banjer and thrown up his situation on the strength of it—that's what he's done. Goin' about singing. Dash and plunge! Jest the very fault poor Pheamy always 'ad. Blunder right in and no one mustn't stop 'er!'"

It is a quotation from Kipps, a novel published in 1905. Kipps comes to home with a suitcase and banjo. Old Kipps and his wife are trying to learn why Kipps returns home and whether he loses his job.

betting on horses

"Godless" because some Christian denominations would have regarded this as morally wrong.

Thanks Jack.
agree B D Finch : Of course, it is betting, not the horses, that she considers godless. It's an example of transfer that I am sure has a specific name, and it's irritating not to be able to think what it is.//Thanks!
