freekfluweel Jan 21, 2014:
@Asker I see, well my mistake... so it's important for the patient to know/tell what kind of/what level of fear he has of needles so the appropriate preparational support/approach can be provided.

Well your suggestions seem plausible but I also don't know if it will work in the British medical world.
Charles Stanford (asker) Jan 21, 2014:
That passage is actually from later on in the same text freek so I have got to draw a distinction between angst and weerstand.
freekfluweel Jan 21, 2014:
@Asker Seems to me this text is addressed to patients, it's not some sort of internal memo amongst doctors, therefore no need to specify the difference between "angst" en "weerstand". It's to reassure patients who are going to be shot! ;-)
Charles Stanford (asker) Jan 20, 2014:
Thanks to all for their input on this. Have just found a bit more context:
Het verschil tussen prikangst en prikweerstand zit vooral in de oorzaak van het verzet tegen de prik. Bij prikangst is het kind echt bang voor de prik zelf, bijvoorbeeld de naald en het idee dat het zeer doet. Bij prikweerstand wordt het verzet vaak niet zozeer veroorzaakt door de prik of naald zelf, maar door alles eromheen.
Not entirely sure what they would use in the medical world but "needle phobia" for "prikangst" and "needle aversion" for p.weerstand" maybe will work
Michael Beijer Jan 20, 2014:
@Freek: As I said, I know nothing about medical stuff. Just thought I'd mention the other possible meaning of 'prikweerstand' I thought of when first seeing the word. You're probably right.

Thanks for the science lesson. And there I was, thinking it was an exact science;)
freekfluweel Jan 20, 2014:
@MB: translating is not an exact science! Read the whole sentence again and you'll find out that there is no way "weerstand" here is sth technical. Indeed the source is saying the same thing three times emphasizing whatever (fear/anxiety) you may have for needles, we have the solution (but I do not know how the rest of the sentence goes...)
Michael Beijer Jan 20, 2014:
I have no medical knowledge at all, but... I wonder if the 'prik' in 'prikweerstand' could also be 'puncture' (which is how my Woordenboek geneeskunde E-N/N-E translates 'prik'), and 'weerstand': 'resistance'.

I then looked in JurLex, and found: huidweerstand = skin resistance

Van Dale Groot woordenboek van de Nederlandse taal (14):
huidweerstand: (psychologie) (elektrische) weerstand van de huid (t.w. als indicatie van emotionaliteit, gespannenheid)
----------------------

Otherwise, the author of the source text seems to have said the same thing three times (fear/aversion/scary).

(As I said, I have no medical knowledge, so feel free to laugh.)
freekfluweel Jan 20, 2014:
aversion to needles/needle aversion If you have a fear of needles, have an aversion or you think needles are just scary,

"needles" could be replaced with "injections", but a "prik" is colloquial for "injectie".

Danke!
agree writeaway : yes weerstand = aversion is in Van Dale Nl-En et al. Don't agree 100% with the word 'needle'. Asker will have to decide if it's that or injection.
