neutral  philgoddard: I'm sure you're right, but you haven't given any references, which means we have to take your word for it.// I meant Spanish references. We know that "gold standard" exists in English.

  -> Seems clear to me that's what it means. I've heard "gold standard" used recently by medics in conversation. I haven't tried Googling, dictionaries etc.
