could you post the items listed around your term in French? The context is always useful and most useful in the source language. You never know whether you could have (although I'm not saying that you have) translated the previous item in the list incorrectly, in which case offering your translation would hinder, rather than help. Perhaps the previous item in the list actually means "assistant TO the study director", in which case the "attaché" could not possibly be the assistant. An "attaché" can either be a deputy in this context or an administrative assistant. Which one it is will be determined by the previous item in the list since it is unlikely that there are two roles the same but with different names.

It sounds like this person would provide administrative assistance, such as being a point of contact, to the study director/research advisor, as opposed to the assistant study director who would be doing some similar things to the study director
