Ostatnie badania dotyczące ssaków, doprowadziły do wskazania na potencjalne gatunki parasolowe występujące pomiędzy dużymi drapieżnikami. W polskiej literaturze najczęstszym przykładem gatunku parasolowego jest wskazywana pachnica dębowa (Osmoderma eremita), gdyż jej ochrona jest równoznaczna z ochroną całego zespołu unikatowych owadów żyjących w *próchnowiskach*, ponieważ jedynym sposobem ochrony pachnicy jest zachowanie mikrosiedlisk rozkładającego się drewna, z których inne gatunki także korzystają .

Próchnowiska to właśnie wspomniane w dalszej części zdania "mikrosiedliska rozkładającego się drewna", które w zasadzie należałoby tłumaczyć tak samo (rotting/rotten wood microhabitats") - dla uniknięcia powtórzenia proponuję skrócić to do "these/those microhabitats" lub przetłumaczyć jako "(micro)habitats of this/that type".
Próchnowisko – murszejące fragmenty drewna na żywych, stojących drzewach: martwice boczne, zagłębienia po uschniętych konarach, gnijące wnętrza starych drzew, obumarłe i obumierające tkanki drzewne wewnątrz dziupli.

: Samo "wood mould" to prostu próchno (nie pasuje do podanego kontekstu ze względu na występującą w nim liczbę mnogą) - ale "wood-mould (micro)habitat[s]" chyba mogłoby być.
