The aim of an ETF is to track the performance of a specified index and to provide investors with the same return as that index, less fees. For this purpose, the ETF either replicates the holdings of the index (known as a ‘physically-replicated’ ETF), or alternatively, replicates the index’s performance by using a synthetic swap structure (known as a ‘derivative-replicating’ ETF).

There are two forms of physical replication: ‘full index replication’ and ‘**sampling replication**’. Full index replication is achieved by buying all of the underlying securities that make up the index. **Sampling replication**, or optimised ETFs, only purchase a sub-set of index components, which has the advantage of reducing administrative and transaction costs.
