Spanish term

slotistas

Spanish to English Bus/Financial Transport / Transportation / Shipping
This one has been posted before in 2007, with no suitable answer. It is a certain type of specialist company in the maritme, logistics or port services sectors. The answerers defined this type of company as:

gestores de derechos de operaciones portuarias

los que usan espacios sobrantes / compartidos

Any idea what you might call this in English?

Discussion

philgoddard Feb 22, 2013:
If you're able to ask the customer (and I know how reluctant agencies can be to do this), I'd be interested to know what they say. It's interesting that your text mentions consolidators, so my suggestion could be right.
S Ben Price (asker) Feb 22, 2013:
It's just a list list of companies in the areas I mentioned. It's "about us" on the web page, we work with ... shipowners, port management (this is what I have for the time being), shipping agencies, logistics, freight, land transport with their own fleets, customs, consolidators, warehousing and distribution
philgoddard Feb 22, 2013:
I think they're called deconsolidators, but I still can't find any link to the Italian word.
Could we have the context that you're translating? It might be helpful.
philgoddard Feb 22, 2013:
This may be completely wrong, but... I'm not convinced by the previous answers, which look like guesses to me.
I'm wondering if it's something to do with "lotto", meaning batch or consignment. Groupage companies combine batches of goods from different customers to fill shipping containers. I don't know what you call the person who breaks them down into individual consignments at the other end of the journey, but this could be a "slottista". I can't find any evidence of this, though; I wonder if it's a made-up word, or has been translated from another language.

slot charterer

This is a pure guess, backed up with a little googling, I believe it refers to the practice of chartering "slots" on a vessel as opposed to the whole vessel. I don't claim any knowledge in the area, but it might be worth looking into.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I think this is it Lucy, thank you. The client described just this to me, so while I'm not super sure about 'charterer' it does seem to make good sense. Thanks."

fleet operators

I think it's a typo for "flotistas".

Relevant uses of "slotista" all seem to emanate from the www.grupocontenosa.com site. It's a very unconvincing word, but "flotistas" makes good sense, especially since it comes just after "armadores".

If you'll allow me a brief rant, one thing that really gets my goat is people who post a pure guess with confidence 5 and no explanation. This, I am pretty sure, is what happened in the previous question. The person who posted "gestores de derechos de operaciones portuarias", with the explanation "lenguage de agentes aduanales", in the previous question on this term, could conceivably have had some basis for saying so, but I am very sceptical.

Sorry, I got that muddled. The answer was "los que usan espacios sobrantes / compartidos", which must surely be a guess based on the meaning of "slot". "Gestores de derechos de operationes portuarias" was the glossary entry, presumably another guess on the part of the asker. Really, this kind of irresponsibility is breathtaking.
Note from asker:
This makes loads of sense, thanks! :)
Peer comment(s):

agree philgoddard : I think this is the most likely. A lot of the hits I found related to vehicle fleets, but this makes sense in the context.

Thanks, Phil. I found the same thing too, but it is also used for shipping. On balance, I think this is probably it.

(container slot brokers)

This would make sense. Hopefully your context will help.

That should be (container) slot broker.

This is certainly used in English. Not many references on the Internet for slotista though. It may well be a sort of made-up word in Spanish.

it comes after armadores, strengthening CD's interpretation but just before consignatarios, or shipping agents, which strenthens this one. I think they made it up as a reference to people who deal in slots, or slot brokers.

Also, this term appears in company web sites. I very much doubt that if it were a typo it would not have been corrected very quickly.

en fin, were it I, I would add a note to the client saying this is what I assume it means but as it is not really a Spanish word the client must confirm it.

I hate to say it but I think this is a good example of where Google is no use whatsoever which will no doubt rule this answer out for a large number of contributors here......

Findings only. However, I leave you with the references found.

That is not to say that I agree with "slottists" as a suitable translation for "slotistas"; Phil has pointed out that it is perhaps a made up word; nor can I find a translation for the Italian word "slottista/slottisti".

@ Ben:

I agree 100%. I know it "slottists" is made up.

Further Googling of the phrase "ship owners · ship agents · x · TRANSIT AGENTS ... transit agents, land transport with its own fleet, customs, consolidators, storage and distribution" shows that the missing piece of the puzzle is "NVOCC".

See further references below for what it is worth:

Note from asker:
I found that as well. But it's clearly not "slottists" since that's not a word or type of business in English. Well ... thanks. I think they just made this word up.

neutral philgoddard : Good research on your part, but these are just lazy translations. // It's not a dig at you - it's a dig at the previous translators who couldn't be bothered to research the word.

I clearly said it is a finding only and I already know it is a poor translation!. I have had it with you and your constant digs! Stop "following me"//My point exactly and even more reason for you to be quiet - lame excuse; credit me for research!
agree Billh : Agree with Phil that somebody translated this web site and could not be bothered to find out what slotistas are. Unless it's a typo it is probably slot brokers.// Take the trouble to look at my references then or google 'container slot broking'.

Thanks. Equally, Charles' entry too makes a lot of sense "flotistas" and it is worth serious consideration. I am not sure what "slot brokers" means./I assure I did; found "Slot Charter http://www.sabrilogistics.com/terms.htm/not discounting yr contr.
