i.e. endless rounds of discussion leading nowhere. Not untypical of the education world, but certainly not a desirable goal in itself.

Sounds like they're consulting with one another to make a decision. I would use educational assistance in a tutoring context.

: Maybe there is something wrong with me, but I do not see how the verb here can be anything but 'discuss' (or possibly 'debate').

The verb is easy. The noun phrase is the tricky part//Sorry about the flippant comment, Tim. Agree that "discuss" should be first choice. Was just being fancy about my choice of verb. Still think it's the noun that makes or breaks the solution, though.
