French term or phrase: faute de quoi
Hello,

I am having difficulty understanding this, it's not really the "faute de quoi" , my understanding of it is "without which" but it seems wrong in this sentence:

without formaliies without which?? please help!
Thank you

otherwise/or else
Explanation:
"and this without formalities, otherwise, there is liable to be legal action taken.."

Needs a little parsing, with comma in the English rendering, at least IMO

Explanation:
Perhaps the comma belongs before "faute de quoi"?

faute de quoi adv. otherwise

faute de quoi otherwise

agree  Nikki Scott-Despaigne: For UK legalese, 'otherwise', rather than "or else". Also "there is liable to be legal action taken...", in legal contexts, " liable" is a technical term and it's use as an ordinary word seems out of place here.
