...nuk është as duke iu ofruar besë si është zakoni tek shqiptarët.

Would "offer their word of honour" be the best translation here?

Discussion

True and right so :) It is true, Lars, Ledias version is, indeed, a better version of mine. Thanks, and have a great week end all!

Sorry I had to deliver the translation before I received all the answers. Fabiana's explanation was good enough for my purpose (Swedish). But Ledja's, with "temporary", is even better, I think. So for the good of future users I select Ledja's answer.

As always, you are welcome. Besa is an Albanian cultural precept, usually translated as "faith", that means "to keep the promise" and "word of honor"

Thanks to both of you! I was thinking that there was a little more to it than the dictionary (Fjalor i shqipës së sotme, 2002, this time, because my Qesku happens to be 70 kms away from here) gave me. So I will use the explanation by Fabiana. Evidently, it doesn't refer to a possible complete "pajtim" between the families in the conflict. -- I'll be back with the award.

offer (temporary) truce / protection

Hi lars-erik,

You may find the following link useful, while this paragraph in particular defines the term really well:

"Article 854 of Chapter 22 of the Kanun describes besa, or truce, as "a period of freedom and security which the family of the victim gives to the murderer and his family, temporarily suspending pursuit of vengeance in the blood-feud until the end of the specified term" (Kanuni 1989). According to Pesha, besa relates to honour and, with respect to blood feuds, is the protection that is offered to someone in a feud (4 Jan. 2008). Standish described besa as a truce that permits individuals and families who are involved in a blood feud to meet to discuss terms of reconciliation (20 Nov. 2007). Reconciliation is further discussed in Section 4.3 of this Issue Paper."

hospitality on their honour

Lars, you are right when you think besë - word of honour, but the context may change the term. To OFFER someone besë would actually mean offer hospitality on your honour, guaranteeing thus that the person will be totally safe in your house for as long as he is in your besë.
