I come across this 'in sicurezza' expression a lot, and have always worked around it using 'implementing safety measures...' and so forth, but now I am translating a long 180-page manual and there are many commands such as 'lampadina MACCHINA IN SICUREZZA', and so forth, which would require a briefer, more direct expression. 'in Safety mode' may be an option, but am not sure it is exact.

"safety mode" Would work well, but it would really need to be defined in the manual, which it probably is. For example turn off the power and cut off the fuel supply to put the machine in safety mode. The term is generally used as an instruction before starting maintenance, but you have to read the manual and see what they mean. Generally I "pencil" in a translation and then go back and change all instances later if necessary.

Your 'in safety mode' sounds fine. It's concise, understandable, and straight to the point. I just finished building a saw mill with a "safety mode" and I would have to agree with your guess.

safety devices Well sometimes safety systems, guards etc. have to be deactivated, to carry out maintenance and adjustments, and then reset and restored to bring the machine back to its safety mode (in sicurezza) before operation. I think this is the case here

Activate / disactivate Something like an entire plant might have safety systems, like sprinkler systems for fires, but these should never be deactivated, unless of course all machinery is switched off. Normally you make machines safe by switching them off and perhaps emptying them.

safety systems Thank you Kara. Considering the type of machine, it is unlikely that 'in sicurezza' simply refers to it being turned off, so my solution should be ok. You will have to make sure, on a case by case basis.

I like Claudia's 'safety systems active', but will also follow Jim's suggestion and see what the safety system actually does. (The equipment is a manufacturing line to make washing machine drums)

neutral James (Jim) Davis : If I switch the ignition off, I make it safe, but don't activate anything. The ignition is the "accensione". When you switch it off you cut all electricity supply, you "disactivate" everything, which makes it safe.

In many years of translating this

pesky little phrase, I've never found an equivalent, but hundreds of work arounds all different. For example relating to an automobile the equivalent of "Macchina in sicurezza" is very probably "ignition switched off". If it is such a large manual, see if this state of the machine is not defined somewhere and work from that.
