This is from the specifications for a geographical information system:

"La zone de définition de critère de relation spatiale est représentée par une liste déroulante contenant les différents opérateurs spatiaux disponibles pour l’outil de recherche spatiale. Cette liste contient les opérateurs :
- Distance (à une distance de),
- Within (à l’intérieur de),
- Intersects (est en intersection avec).

Lorsque l’entrée « Distance » est sélectionnée, une zone de saisie apparait. Celle-ci permet de spécifier un buffer en kilomètres. Ce buffer est appliqué à la géométrie de référence lors du lancement de la recherche et la géométrie résultante sert d’**emporte pièce** pour la recherche. Pour exemple, lors de l’initialisation de la zone de saisie, la valeur « 0.0 » est affichée afin que l’utilisateur ait connaissance du formalisme attendu."

Seemingly not a punch, nor a biscuit cutter as previous KudoZ answers suggest. Some kind of a virtual mould perhaps?
