English term or phrase: Even as it is
Hello everyone,

I am in the confidence of some of the masters of
this wondrous power, and have witnessed many startling
exhibitions of thought transference, but as the promise of
secrecy was exacted from me by these friends, my lips are of
course sealed. Outside of these considerations, it would be of
very doubtful wisdom to spread, broadcast, information of this
nature, which would place within the means of unscrupulous
persons the power to work their wills upon their fellow men.
***Even as it is***, fragments of this occult knowledge have leaked
out and have been misused

Does "even as it is" mean however (implying "although I didn't do that, i.e. I did not reveal those secrets")?
Or does it mean something like "even in the situation as it is now (implying "even in the current state of affairs")"

Thank you.

agree  Sheila Wilson: "even in the situation as it is now", as suggested by the Asker
1 min
-> Thanks, Sheila. This text could use a red pencil (or an eraser). "Notwithstanding" would be another way of putting it.

agree  Allison Wright (X): Notwithstanding (+ "the above", or "the element of secrecy"). I agree with your red pencil idea, Jenni. "Nevertheless" would probably be the best one-word solution in this rather sloppily written text.

-> Cheers and thanks, Allison. I've got a similar one on my desk right now!

agree  amarpaul: Alison's "Nevertheless" sounds good. Do all these sloppy writers get paid by the word, do you think?

Explanation:
Your second suggestion is how I understand the phrase in this context.

The phrase could be replaced in the original, with little change of meaning, by the word "already".

agree  Charles Davis: I agree, and I think what it implies is "even though strenuous efforts have been made to keep it secret". In other words, I have not revealed it, but others, who were presumably sworn to secrecy too, have done so.

even though I did not as I promised not to

Explanation:
It does mean pretty much as you said, "however (implying "although I didn't do that, i.e. I did not reveal those secrets")?

Or it could also be restated, even though I kept the promise of secrecy some fragements of this occult knowledge have leaked out.
