Dear Fellows

I need your help regarding the transltion of "£300m" in the following sentence:

Currently, the company is working towards a five-year plan to replace some £300m of metallic pipes, translating to around 420km of old mains pipes per year.

I don't get the relationship between that figure in Pounds and the amount in kilometers of pipes.
