French term
(nombre de) rapports de transmission
French to English

complaint about gearbox
Nombre de rapports trop limité, induisant une conduite peu fluide, avec des à-coups
I have checked this out on Proz & elsewhere but would like expert opinion - is it 'gear ratio', ignoring the plural?

(number of) gear ratios
No, why ignore the plural? A gearbox has several gear ratios (mine has 6, and I never know which one I'm in, dammit!)

Thanks, J! Couldn't say, have never heard that particular term.

: 6-speed gearbox? wow!

Merci, Philippe ! I was better with my DAF: forward to go forward, backward to go back, and no chance of getting it wrong ;-)

: I believe some trucks have up to 16, and racing bikes with a narrow power band require much cog-swapping

Thanks, C! Yes, and some tractors 80!! Surely it's the biker who has a low narrow power band :-))

transmission ratio

: Careful! That tends to mean the axle ratio (i.e. the ratio of the differential), rather than the gearbox as here.

number of speeds/gears
In this context, it is rather the number of speeds in the gearbox, not the actual reduction ratio. Cf. boîte à 5 rapports that means 5-speed gearbox.
It basically means that you have to go high in revs to get to the next gear (whether auto or manual) , hence a drive that doesn't feel smooth.

: Yes, though in technical EN, we do indeed talk about the 'ratios' of a gearbox, without necessarily referring to the overall ratio of the whole transmission chain.

Thank you Tony; it used to be about 1:1 in 4th gear on an average car, I wouldn't dream of such a ratio on the whole transmission chain!

: Slight preference for "gears" but either is correct

Discussion
number of gears — perfectly understandable layman's term
number of speeds — rather more informal
number of gear speeds — no-no!
