interesting possibilities but... although I'm just reiterating, it seems pretty clear from the asker's text, "recepcionar la declaración de la adolescente… en la Audiencia Especial de Declaración Referencial", that its simply "receive the statement of the adolescent/minor(?) … at the Special Hearing for the Introduction of the Witeness' Statement (made before whoever)", being a special hearing because if the witness were of legal age, the evidence would be heard at the regular hearing.

re feedback Bearing in mind we know now that this is an international adoption, Referencial could be about a referral from the court of one country to that of the other. Pure speculation again because I don't know for sure what it means.

The adoption is not being contested but it is significant because the child being adopted is still in Peru while the adopter is now in the US. I've read through all 22 pages and there is no indication that the police is involved. As you indicated they are indeed two distinct hearings.

I'll need to give this doc a fresh look---it is very convoluted throughout and it makes references to other docs to which I have no access.

Thank you both for your help. It helps to hear different ideas.

to clarify granted, the statement is not made before police officers in the example provided by AllegroTrans, and he's right, it may not may been made before the police in the case at hand. The asker may know before whom the statement was made. But my point is to give the asker an idea of what a "declaración referencial" is regardless of before whom the statement was made. so if more clarity is needed, I would translate "Audiencia Especial de declaración referencial" as "Special Hearing for the Introduction of a Witness' Statement made Before…" leaving the asker to decide before whom.

@ Rich Suggestion seems basically sound, but I imagine this to be a Court hearing by the Judge deciding on adoption, and NOT before Police Officers. Here in UK, for example, Judges in adoption proceedings like to hear "live" evidence from parties such as social workers and adoption placement agencies. Maybe in asker's case, this is a contested adoption, hence "special" hearing, or maybe there is an international dimension.
