Portuguese to English Other Slang
Como traduzir para inglês a frase "FAZ O FRETE"? (FRETE no sentido de encargo difícil, estopada, aborrecimento.)

Discussion

Manuel O (asker) Jan 28, 2011:
Thanks Verginia, but as I said bellow it's direct speech. Someone is urging (or ordering) someone else to "make an effort" or something like this.
Verginia Ophof Jan 28, 2011:
balking(ly) /dragging one's feet
He balked at doing it -
drag one's feet: to take a long time to do something; to be reluctant to act. .....did it like it was a drag

Manuel O (asker) Jan 28, 2011:
Hi Tobias. It's non-fiction and it's direct speech. Someone is urging someone else to do the "frete". It's a sort of a poem, so the meaning is rather vague. Most answers here are specifically related to work, but I think the "frete" here is used in a more general sense. I'm now inclined to translate it as "take the strain". I think it can more or less work...

@Manuel O It would be interesting to know more about the context - fiction/non-fiction, type of document, direct/indirect speech, etc.

take up the slack

"Another period of shouting on our part, but
this time we waited with greater equanimity for
the answering hail. We told them the hose
would immediately be sent down. We told them
to take up the slack and stand by for food."

i.e. do something useful instead of doing nothing

"When I complained to the assistant dean running the program, she told me it was my responsibility to take up the slack & teach them what they needed in order to catch up."

i.e. do the work the assistant dean didn't have time to do.

2. Fig. to do what needs to be done; to do what has been left undone. Do I have to take the slack up? Jill did her job poorly and I have to take up the slack.
