Italian term or phrase: operatore d'aiuto
I am working on a group of short articles, one of which is entitled "Combattere il burn-out dell'operatore d'aiuto nella realtà oncologica". Is the "operatore d'aiuto" something like a nursing tech or certified nursing assistant in the US?

English translation:volunteer (trained) helpers
Explanation:

Hi Dawn,
I think it corresponds to this professional title. Ciao!

The process by which a professional counselor helps a person cope with mental or emotional distress, and understand and solve personal problems.

In un altro ambito ti avrei suggerito "social worker", ma credo che in campo oncologico sia piu' corretto counselor.

neutral  Lirka: wait, but professional counselors are usually clinical psychologists, and I don't thnk these 'volunteers' have this particular qualification. More context needed.

-> you are right, I had no idea we were talking about volunteers, and I haven't read anything about volunterism when I was researching (but it was past 10:30 pm, and I was a little "burn out" myself :)

Health care staff/hospital staff

Explanation:
Although there are lots of references to a counsellor being an "operatore d'aiuto", I think a counsellor is just ONE KIND OF "operatore d'aiuto". Try something more generic such as health care volunteer or health care staff. This article http://www.psicopolis.com/burnout/Pandorafatto.htm says that "La sindrome del burn-out è stata identificata come specifica malattia professionale degli operatori dell’aiuto da C. Maslach nel 1975." Other English language articles on the subject often speak about hospital staff in general or different types of hospital staff, for example, "Burnout syndrome is widespread among emergency service personnel."
