French term

Comité de la Charte du Don en confiance

French to English Other Other NGOs
There doesn't appear to be a KudoZ category for this (at least, I've not identified one which corresponds).

To quote its web site, "Le Comité de la Charte du don en confiance est un organisme d'agrément et de contrôle des associations et fondations faisant appel à la générosité du public."
I am unable to find an "official" translation - is there one? If not, can anybody suggest one please?
Thank you.

Discussion

Michael GREEN (asker) Mar 6, 2010:
Tricky ... I think Liz deserves 4 points for her research and helpful contributions, but I would like to make the following comments:
While many countries have equivalent bodies to the Comité de la Charte, their titles, and even functions, are often different: eg in the USA, the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA).
When an international NGO publishes a text in English, it is not merely addressing the UK or other countries with EN as a main language, it is also aimed at other people for whom English is a second or third language, and for that reason I don't feel able to opt for the solution of quoting the FR title with (eg) "similar to the ABFO" in brackets or as a footnote.
In the present case, I am going to use "Comité de la Charte (independent supervisory body for voluntary donations)", which is long-winded, but so is the full FR title - so long, in fact, that it scarcely seems to be used in full.
Soit dit en passant, the EN version of the Wikipedia page on the Restos du Coeur (founder member of the Comité de la Charte etc) ducks the issue and does not translate the paragraph dealing with it.
A coward's way out that no professional translator should follow, IMHO.
Michael GREEN (asker) Mar 5, 2010:
Jack... I don't have a "problem" with penfriend - it is simply that, as I pointed out, I was already aware of the ABFO, which is no doubt an equivalent organisation, but I was hoping, in my naive way, to find an accepted/acceptable translation of the French body. Otherwise I would have followed Liz' approach and retained the FR term, with "equivalent of ABFO" in brackets - but a non-British reader of the text (and there may be many - my humble translation is for the FR branch of a "well-known NGO") would then wonder what the dickens the ABFO was ....
Jack Dunwell Mar 4, 2010:
Having dashed hither and thither, without success, I think you are free to make up yr own answer, M.
Jack Dunwell Mar 4, 2010:
Well, there are the Charity Commissioners, Admiral, but I'll keep trawling for something more neutral. What, again is yr problem with penfriend? Are you looking for some other poor blighter's attempt that becomes Gospel?
Michael GREEN (asker) Mar 4, 2010:
Just to make it clear ... I am aware of (eg) the ABFO in the UK, and other more or less equivalent organisations (which go under a variety of names) in other countries, but I am looking for the "official" translation of the French organisation: or suggestions for one.

i see the site has translated the French as

Charter Committee

as for "official" translation, I wouldn't know.

However, as a matter of principle, I tend to leave the original French in place.

To improve financial accountability, from the time of its creation, Médecins du Monde co-founded the Charter Committee. This supervisory body brings together over 50 associations and French foundations who share a number of ethical principles including budgetary discipline and financial transparency. In 1996, Médecins du Monde was elected to the governing body of the Charter Committee. The association is already a member of a large number of its working groups, and it now intends to step up its action within the Committee, in working out a policy of accountability with regard to donors.

another idea

Comité de la Charte (with a footnote) (donations can be made in confidence)

- "Charter Committee"

personally I do think you need to have "donations" in there otherwise the English audience will be even more confused about what this Committee does. Not that we are thick or anything!!!
Note from asker:
Thank you very much, Liz, for all the research and helpful suggestions!

Thank you!
agree philgoddard : I would leave the whole thing untranslated - it looks funny with the first half in French and the second in English.

Well, if it is untranslated a footnote will be required explaining to the English audience what the entire phrase means:)

Thank you, but I naturally did a web search before posting my question, and apart from already being aware of the ABFO, I found the Wikipedia link within about 10 seconds ...
