Explanation:
Sanguine (Hematite) is a red-brown iron-oxide chalk, usually mined in Italy. Its color, particularly when used on cream paper with touches of white, makes it wonderfully suited for figure drawing, and it was a staple tool of the old masters.

neutral  Evans (X): if you are right and it is a typo, the English would be "sanguine" as in sanguine drawing, but only your first reference makes any sense in the context. The other refs have nothing to do with art.
