agree  Joel Schaefer: The context refers to DO wines, a less specific term than DOC or DOCG. Not sure if current Italian or EU laws use DO in Italy. The D refers to denomination, not designation.

The two most general categories of wine in Europe are "quality wines" and "table wines".

Italian DOC(G), French AC, Portuguese DOC, Spanish DO etc wines are all QWPSR (quality wine produced in a specific region). "Controlled appellation" is also used in English to refer to non-table wines. IATE offers "wine with a registered designation of origin" but with a low reliability rating.
