antesala

English translation: prelude

Spanish term or phrase: antesala
Context: El torneo era la antesala de la llamada XXXXX Cup.

I'm leaning towards "culmination", as this seems to be the championship tournament of a year long set of qualifying tournaments, much like the World Cup. Any other ideas?

Prelude

Explanation:
As far as I know, ANTESALA is usually an event that takes place before another event.
For instance, let's say a small soccer tournament is held before the World Cup. So that one would be LA ANTESALA DEL MUNDIAL DE FÚTBOL.
Wouldn't prelude be a better translation for that?
I hope I've been of assistance.
Saludos.

In a sports context, I think either of these alternatives work better than either "prelude" or "precursor."

Suerte.

warm-up tournament

Explanation:
This is the standard term we use, in football at least, for tournaments held in the run-up to bigger competitions and used to prepare for these.
