French term

réfrigérateur tout-utile

French to English Tech/Engineering Mechanics / Mech Engineering Domestic appliance: fridge
réfrigérateur tout-utile

This seems to be a standard term used in French for type of a domestic fridge. I'm thinking "all-purpose fridge", or maybe "fridge-freezer". I'm sure someone else out there has had to translate this. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help...

Tony M Jul 12, 2009:
Here's an example http://www.darty.com/nav/achat/gros_electromenager/refrigera... found this site (albeit a translated FR one) that refers to it as a 'freezerless refrigerator'

Réfrigérateur 1 porte Indesit SAN 300 ... Types de produits: Freezerless Refrigerator ... Refrigerator Shelf Construction: Glass ...

refrigerateurs.shopzilla.fr/9L--Refrigerateur_1_porte_Indesit_SAN_300_-_cat_id--14284__prod_id--380002405

— but I think that reeks of translation!
Tony M Jul 12, 2009:
First suggestion I very readily found this little 'glossary' from Darty which explains that it is indeed the first of my two suggestions:

Darty - frigo

Dirigez-vous vers les frigos "tout utile". Dépourvus de freezer, ils sont agencés pour profiter du maximum de volume utile pour disposer vos produits frais. ...

www.darty.com/electromenager.../frigo.htm

I feel sure by looking up the equivalent models on an EN site, you should be able to find the EN term.

Thanks Tony My internet research has been unusually fruitless (thus far) Image results have also been fairly inconclusive. Still working on it, but had hoped that someone here might have a quick answer for me. Thanks for your comments anyway.
Tony M Jul 12, 2009:
I don't think it's quite that, Philip From recollection, I think it means one of two things:

either

a 'fridge (like my own!) that is all fridge, i.e. does not have even a small frozen food compartment.

or

one where the entire volume inside is usable, as the compressor unit is located in a separate compartment that does not impinge on the interior as in most 'fridges.

You should be able to check this out fairly readily with a little Internet research and some images.

Sorry, I've never actually come across a specific translation — though I suspect the FR term may well be derived from an EN one in the first place...

freezerless refrigerator

this seems like it might work based on looking at them on the web and reading the other comments
Peer comment(s):

agree Tony M : Looks like you're right! There are enough native EN Ghits to make me believe it — though I do note they seem to be largely US, so maybe this is the AE term? / Cf. Sears' website, for example...

Thanks, although I've never actually seen one in the US!

Merci!
neutral Tony M : I can't help thinking that's a bit ambiguous — not least, because this particular type of 'fridge actually only serves ONE purpose (i.e. it doesn't do freezer as well)!

All-refrigerator

It's a clumsy term, but if you google "refrigerator" + "no freezer" you will hit this term and it's probably, as Tony suggested, where the French came from.

Nb. I found the google image search on the phrase "refrigerateur tout utile" pretty conclusive - important to search as a phrase of course.

Or just a "freezerless refrigerator"!

(Just saw Tony suggested that in the discussion - not so convinced it's translatese...)
Peer comment(s):

agree NancyLynn : I bought one from Sears three years ago called an All-Fridge (I'd check to see if that's a registered name.)

Yes, may well be. Thanks Nancy!

larder fridge / refrigerator

Now I see the expression again, I'm pretty sure this is the term your seeking:

I think this is the UK term (especially since it is so often teamed with 'fridge'), whereas 'freezerless' seems to be used a lot in the US.
Peer comment(s):

agree Jennifer White : I think larder fridge is right too, ie without even the usual freezer bit at the top.

Thanks, Jennifer! Yes, that's exactly it... the FR term makes me laugh: as if the freezer bit isn't useful!
