What would be a suitable translation for "in Bewegung bringen"? I can only think of "shake up" or "cause them to redefine", but neither is really what I'm looking for.

upset the equilibrium
I would imagine that the therapist is attempting to upset the client's/patient's emotional and psychological equilibrium, before going on to help them develop healthier and more functional responses.

'Challenge the patient's current equilibrium' might be another possibility.

precipitate a new balance
Again one would need to know more about what the Gleichgewicht refers to, but precipitate would work perhaps

or maybe 'foster', though that is less of a specific intervention, but rather is achieved over time.

harmonious state of being for Gleichgewicht? Depends on the date of the text.

I would have to see much more of the text to understand what is being done. What sort of psychotherapy is this? What sort of intervention is being enacted?

'precipitate a redefinition of the person's fundamental state of balance', though I don't know what this balance means here.

Note from asker:
Yes, but that's not what the text says --- it's about what's being done to the OLD (established) Gleichgewicht. That's what I need a verb for. |

Thanks, Harald - without more context re the balance issue, it is hard to be sure.

challenge the/an established balance
"In Bewegung bringen" geht wohl hier einer "new balance" voraus.
