: Shouldn't it be "acquire an equity interest IN a company"? // Thanks. I figured there was something odd in the sentence... the US government has been almost taking over several banks, so I guess that's what they are trying to say :-)

You have a sharp eye. "from" is not wrong, but the meaning changes decisively. The US government is buying shares in banks not shares from them as far as I know. Buying shares they hold wouldn't help them, unless they'd paid higher than market prices.
