Omar Lima Quintana Jun 10, 2009:
Patricia & jack: Hi. You are wright again There is not official translation for this "Dirección". It's a Ministery of Health (official) dependence, dealing with control policies (health and securuty as well).
Take care.
Omar Lima Quintana Jun 10, 2009:
I'm looking for the official site. Be patient. This is fun. Do you agree with the unofficial trans?
Luciana Diciero (asker) Jun 10, 2009:
I cannot possibly leave it in English, it's a certified translation and so I cannot leave text in a foreign language. Thanks everyone for their help!
jack_speak Jun 10, 2009:
It's NOT official Omar, please note that Patiricia and I agree: the website-link she cited is NOT an official website of the Argentinian government.
Omar Lima Quintana Jun 10, 2009:
Patricia and peers: I'm affraid it´s an official document.
Do you agree with the official words?
Patricia Rosas Jun 10, 2009:
Global Legal Information Network I guess it wasn't translated by the Argentine government but by this group; here's a link: http://tinyurl.com/na7jpe
Patricia Rosas Jun 10, 2009:
Daniel's answer is in official documents Official Argentine government documents offer a summary of their laws in both Eng. and Spanish, so I think we have to accept this as the "official" English version.
Omar Lima Quintana Jun 10, 2009:
Pomposity. "Mucho ruido y pocas nueces". I do agree with Richard. So, let's look for a good trans to put it (in)...
Richard McDorman Jun 10, 2009:
Names, names, and more names... I agree with Omar's opinion that, no matter how this is translated, it has an odd ring to it in English. Nonetheless, I do believe that it would still have to be translated; otherwise, a monolingual English reader would be clueless as to what it meant. Sometimes the best available option is less then satisfying.

Good luck!

agree Richard McDorman : This is certainly more than sufficient. I have often found that the names of many Latin American governmental bureaus and directorates sound somewhat arcane in English, no matter how you phrase them.

agree Omar Lima Quintana : Patricia, Daniel:When You're Wright, You're Right!. This is the truly horrible trans from my gov.

Thanks, Omar!
neutral jack_speak : Luciana, although Daniel found his suggestion on the web, I honestly don't think it is very meaningful to a native English speaker. I suggest you create an originial version. I will try to think of one and place a suggestion for you.

disagree gsloane : Makes no sense in English.

National Bureau of Border Health Control

I think it is silly to try to make a translation demasiado literal. No one will understand it.

You can say:

National Border Health Control Agency or
National Bureau of Border Health Control ...

... and then you should put in parenthesis or in a footnote: (Dirección Nacional de Registro, Fiscalización y Sanidad de Fronteras)

The Argentinian Bureau of Border Health Control is part of the Ministry of Health, and the purpose is to stop disease from entering the country. Here it is explained:
"Funciones y Objetivos del Ministra de Salud de la Nación de Argentina"
"...
...10. Entender en la fiscalización médica de la inmigración y la defensa sanitaria de fronteras, puertos, aeropuertos y medios de transporte internacional; "
http://www.msal.gov.ar/htm/Site/instit_des_func.asp

= to oversee (undertake) Border Health Control

And, Luciana, if you want, you can say: Bureau of Border Health Enforcement and Control

Examples:
"Office of Border Health"
http://www.nmborderhealth.org/partneringorgs.shtml

"USA-Mexico Boarder Health"
http://borderhealth.raconline.org/topics/topic.php?topic=Dia...

"BORDER HEALTH CONTROL MEASURES"

Peer comment(s):

agree gsloane : Any one of those you have proposed. The federal agency for translation in Ottawa, Canada, has produced an excellent trilingual terminologly for the OAS. If I manage to dig up an online version, I'll post it for future reference.
