Italian term

rigidità antalgica

Italian to English Medical Medical (general) Orthopedics
This term appears in an article about the muscle-relaxant medication MuscoRil. It describes how the medication's effectiveness was tested -- which variables were considered.

" ... per la valutazione dell'efficacia terapeutica ... l'intensita' della resistenza ai movimenti passivi, *rigidita' antalgica*, contrattura muscolare e ... ".

"Rigidita' antalgica" has to do with deliberate contraction or holding in order to minimize pain: "...Il rachide cervicale risponde al trauma con una *rigidità antalgica*, la muscolatura si contrae per ridurre le sollecitazioni sul segmento leso ... ". Given this, what is the appropriate English (US) medical term for this?

Thank you all again.

Discussion

Joseph Tein (asker) May 25, 2009:
antalgic I ended up using this direct (almost) translation because I find this word used, although not very frequently, in other phrases such as "antalgic gait" and "antalgic posture" and therefore I think it will be understood by professionals who read this paper.

antalgic stiffness

In case of symptoms for autoimmune diseases or pain in general I often found 'stiffness'. Actually in this context I would not be 100% sure, because stiffness is a sign of the disease and maybe it is more related to joints rather than to muscles... By the way please find following a hit as well if it might be of help:

A comment now on this answer: I do find this term in a small number of online references, but some of them are translations again from Italian, and some of them from India, and I don't find any references from the U.S. or U.K. So I'm still wondering if there is a more common medical term for this in the mainstream English-speaking world.

See also "antalgia" in the link above and here:

but I think "reflex spasm" is more frequent and understandable.

perhaps

would be more precise.

Before I did not suggested it because I thought that 'rigidity' was more medical. But I re-thought about it, check some links and yes I guess that stiffness is more correct :)

neutral SJLD : well no, cara, antalgia means "against pain" - the spasm/rigidity is a reaction to pain, it's not painful in itself

eheheh I knew someone (mainly you) would have advanced this seemingly reasonable objection, but actually they are the same thing! (in this case, egg and chicken are born at the same time ;)) You would be right if we were dealing with 'irrigidimento antal
