German term

Eingabefeldinformationen

German to English Tech/Engineering Media / Multimedia IT
Context:

Über die Bedienoberfläche können verschiedene Zusatzinformationen eingegeben und verwaltet werden. Die Eingabefeldinformationen sind nahezu frei konfigurierbar und individuell anpassbar.

I wonder, does 'Eingabefeldinformationen' refer to the information entered in the input boxes, or the input box labels, or perhaps something entirely different? Or is it impossible to say for sure?

Discussion

Susanne Schiewe May 1, 2009:
"box" vs. "field" I think 'field' is used when the field size is not fixed, i.e. it expands according to the information being entered. 'Box' is more likely to be used for a fixed size, like a 'search box'.
Lonnie Legg Apr 30, 2009:
"box" vs. "field" @David: Are you saying "Microwave Journal" ("Data entry fields"/see my suggestion) has got it wrong? (Unless there are two techological camps involved here--I'm no programmer, so I couldn't say--perhaps "box" vs. "field" are used interchangeably & it's just a matter of personal preference...?
Lingua.Franca Apr 30, 2009:
"input field" gets 9 million GHits. Not that this is a source of authority, but I just asked my computer programmer/nerd friend, who said it's a field. Google has twice as many hits for field than for box. Google images has 15 times as many hits for field than for box. Up to you.
David Williams (asker) Apr 30, 2009:
Many langauges and programmers refer to boxes As the links I've provided, though just a few, show, many authoritative sources, both monolingual and bilingual, call them input boxes, in HTML, javascript, java, css, ajax, etc. etc. It's not just Microsoft by any means, that was simply meant as an industry standard.<br>"input box" only gets about 5 million Ghits (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rlz=1G1GGLQ_DEDE321&q="in... of which that Microsoft link is just the first.

The WWW Consortium call it an input box too, e.g.:

Lingua.Franca Apr 30, 2009:
Blasphemy :-) I think that Microsoft is wrong!

It's called an input field in HTML, php, javascript and in other programming languages. Just because Microsoft calls it a box doesn't mean it's not a field!

The WWW Consortium, along with about a few hundred thousand other sites call it input field.

If it were a "search field", I'd agree. "Search box" sounds better. But I still think it's input field. And I'm sticking to it :-)

Input box information

"input box information can be configured in practically any way (format, structure, etc.) and tailored to individual requirements." I think this refers to what information you are inputting into the operating interface. I am guessing this is a touchscreen for something like a lighting board, or other operator interface.

I like "data" but was not sure if that is to specific. Field sounds good. I could not decide if you fill out fields or boxes.
Note from asker:
Not quite, or not necessarily. To see the kind of application in question here, see: http://broadcastengineering.com/automation/wdr_commissions_bfe_to_renew_broadcast_center/
As I've mentioned in response to the other answers here, most software vendors refer to "input boxes".

input field data

First, I think it's field, and not box. Although this is being nit-picky.

Second, I think that it's data and not information. You enter data and administer data: data entry and data(base) administrator. Configuring data sounds better than configuring information.

Here, input field data can be freely configured.
Note from asker:
An Eingabefeld ist called an 'input box' by Microsoft (and most others too, I believe), e.g.: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/3yfdhzk5(VS.85).aspx
@ Stefani: No. This seems a terribly common mistake, but no! Please check any genuine English or American source of computer terminology. Here, "field" is not the correct translation of "Feld", even if Germans like to refer to it in that way. The Microsoft field is: http://www.winvistabeta.com/files/wallpaper/Bliss.jpg

As you can see, even authoritative German sites can get it right. Sorry to harp on about this, but this mistake is regular a source of irritation.
Peer comment(s):

agree Stefanie Reinhold : Yes, Germans like to use 'Information' when speaking of data. And nit-pickingly I agree, it's a field!

(custom) entry/input fields

The German 'Eingabefeldinformationen' is a bit fuzzy -- actually, it's the input field *content* that can be freely defined/configured -- but I'd just leave out "content":
"Information input fields can be custom-defined and adapted to meet user needs."
Example sentence:

"Data entry fields can be defined for specific customer parameters such as part identification..."

Note from asker:
The correct translation of 'Eingabefeld' is 'input box'. See "Correct English Translations", for example: http://www.german.com.au/s2e.html
