| as in stations of the cross しなくてはならないことを順序立ててする（行う） Explanation: 上記の英文から察すると、 "stations, as in Stations of the Crossは比喩で使用されているわけですよね。Wikipediaの十字架の道行きという項目を見ると、以下のように記述されています： カトリック教会で行われる儀式で、中世末期から行われてきた。キリストのまねびの一形態ともいえる。イエス・キリストの受難の捕縛から受難を経て復活まで15の場面を、個々の場所や出来事を心に留めて祈りを奉げる。聖地巡礼ではそれぞれの場所で祈祷を行う。これを模すためにカトリック教会の聖堂では壁に捕縛から埋葬まで14場面の聖画像が掲げてある。最後の15番目場面の復活は祭壇側に向かって祈る。ただし、四旬節中は、14番目までの祈りが奉げられる。特に四旬節は毎週金曜日に行われるのが一般的である。 つまり、1番目からから15番目まであることを順序に従って行う、ということだと思います。したがって、英語の原文では最初は用意も何もしていなくて、どう事を進めたらいいのか誰も全く考えていなかった。まるでパズルのピースを合わせてゆくように（ちょっと意訳ですが）、最初の日はすべきことをどういう順番で行う（まとめるか）について話し合ったという訳になると思います。 結果、上記の訳でどうでしょうか？ |

| as in stations of the cross 「東海道五十三次」のように Explanation: どのような文脈でその言葉が使われるか把握していないので自信はありませんが、もしかして"of the cross"の部分より、"stations"という部分のほうが重視されるのではないかと。 つまり、欧米では、カトリック教の影響で、「順番に見る／行う」のは"stations of the cross"を連想させますけど、特に苦しみ、試練という意味がこもっていなければ、日本人には"sereies of stations"を連想させるには、北斎の「東海道五十三次」などを使えないかなぁと思いました。 文脈にまったく合わないことも考えられますが、意訳を超えた「イメージ訳」を提案します。 |
